We believe that school life should have academic challenge, be motivating, full of first hand experiences and providing exciting opportunities, while preparing all children for life. This applies to all children in our school. The core beliefs on which our creative curriculum have been developed are:
- Social and emotional well being through spiritual and moral development
- Community links including local, national and global communities
- Appreciation of the outdoor environment
- Quality, creative learning in preparation for life
Our Creative Curriculum includes themes such as Rainforests, Tudors, Famous People, Seaside and Houses and Homes. We also try to reflect current events into our curriculum and have incorporated topics such as The Royal Wedding, Olympics, World War One and World Cup into our long term plans.
Our lessons are planned using statutory objectives from the 2014 National Curriculum. We adapt our planning according to the needs and interests of our pupils in order to maintain a stimulating and relevant curriculum.
We believe in educating the children about equality and are part of the Educate and Celebrate programme, promoting positive relationships and fairness for all.
As part of our creative curriculum, our Year 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 children participate in outdoor learning on a regular basis. This involves them taking part in outdoor learning opportunities one day a week with a local organisation, ‘Real Adventure Through Sport’. These experiences develop a range of personal and social skills, confidence, resilience and independence, as well as covering the Key Stage 1 and 2 National Curriculum. Taking place off site, at a range of settings around the North East, the children experience exciting, hands on learning at locations such as Crimdon Beach, High Force and Hamsterley Forest.
Schools have been asked to explain how they promote British Values. Find out about our approach to British Values at our school.

The National Curriculum 2014 objectives for foundation subjects are covered on a two/four year rolling program. We aim to make the topics we teach as relevant and interesting as possible and therefore their content can be lead by the interests of both our pupils and staff. We ensure that over the time a pupil is in each Key Stage, they will have covered all statutory objectives required. Due to a class restructure, we are currently reviewing the curriculum set up across KS2.
The objectives for the National Curriculum 2014 for such foundation subjects can be found below:
Educate and Celebrate
We are a Rainbow School!
Since September 2015, we have been proud to call ourselves a ‘Rainbow School’ because we are actively promoting equality and social inclusion. We have embedded the ‘Educate and Celebrate’ programme into our curriculum. The programme provides positive relationships and understanding. It is based around a set of stories about different families, relationships and gender identities.
The approaches used in ‘Educate and Celebrate’ have been recognised by Ofsted as best practice for taking a whole school approach to teaching equality.
The document below is published by Ofsted and gives guidelines as to how a school will be assessed on their policy, prevention and tackling of homophobic and transphobic issues.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Hutton Henry CofE Primary School we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development.
If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
